"I'm proud to announce that I'm starting a new position as a Summer Communications Intern at Squibber!" I'd like to thank Jonathan Manta and Seth Lupo for all their help during the hiring process. I can't wait to get started with this incredible opportunity!"

If you've ever seen a post like the one above, you're not alone. After all, behind every summer intern are two things: a great LinkedIn post and an even better summer sublet.

What Are Summer Sublets?

Sublets are the perfect way to find a place to live for the duration of your summer internship. In May or June, most students leave their off-campus housing, returning home for the summer or jetting off to another location to work. Instead of leaving their rooms vacant, many students opt to sublet their rooms. This allows another student, one who is not an original signatory on their lease agreement, to live in their space, while paying rent, usually for two or three months. Subletters have access to all the amenities that the living space has to offer, but their agreement expires at the end of the summer.

Perfect Timing

Lease agreements usually run for one or two years, with expiry dates typically on the first of June or September. Hence, the summertime is the perfect period to sublet, as you'll be covering the first or last two months of many people's leases, at a time when many are not living at school. For recent graduates or off-campus housing newbies, therefore, a subletter can be a godsend.

The Benefits

Subletting is also a more cost-friendly and hassle-free option for the summer. Many hosts are desperate to find someone to live in their space during the summer months, meaning they'll often bring down rent rates to appeal to subletters. Some subletters may also be exempt, depending on the agreement they reach with the landlord and host, from paying excess fees, like utilities or internet. Additionally, most off-campus houses are pre-furnished, meaning it's not necessary to bring additional items, which are expensive and hard to ship across the country, to your sublet. (Go save that intern dough!) Best of all, subletting over the summer allows you to experience a new city and culture, without the necessity of moving there. For two months, you can live, work, and go out in a new city while experiencing nice weather and making new friends. You don't have to confine yourself to remote internships out of a fear of not being able to find housing or of having to run around town like you're on an episode of House Hunters.
